The Xbox 360 is the second video games console produced by Microsoft and follows on from the original Xbox. The Xbox 360’s current rivals in the home entertainment market are the Sony Playstation 3 and the Nintendo Wii.

The Xbox 360 was originally launched back in November/December 2005 and has since sold over 42.9million consoles worldwide. There have been 5 variations on the Xbox 360 since launch and all but 1 have been discontinued.

The current model is known as the Xbox 360 S, which comes in 2 versions 4Gb and 250Gb. The Xbox 360 S is a slimmer version of the original Xbox 360, which runs cooler, quieter and consumes less power.

The Xbox 360’s main selling points include

  • A dedicated Online Multi-player gaming service or Xbox LIVE, which is currently priced at £39.99 a year, with a variety of monthly options available, which also allows for early access to game demos, discounted games, DLC (Downloadable Content), music, game and movie trailer
  • A FREE version of Xbox LIVE, which allows for content downloads only; demos, games and DLC. No Online Multi-player is supported with the free service
  • The built-in WiFi allows users to do away with the unsightly, grey network cables and supports all 3 wireless network protocol; 802.11 b/g/n
  • Region specific, third-party media streaming services such as Netflix and ESPN (in the US) or Sky Player (in the UK)
  • The Xbox can also be hooked up to a Windows Media Centre enabled PC allowing for additional streaming capabilities from your home PC to the Xbox 360. This allows streaming of videos, photos and music to the Xbox without having to have these files stored on the Xbox’s hard drive.
  • With the included 250Gb hard drive, the Xbox 360 S gives the user huge storage capabilities to download and install content from Xbox LIVE
  • Optional install of games from disc, which allows for faster load times and a quieter, cooler functioning Xbox 360 S
  • Use your body as a controller with the Microsoft Xbox Kinect
